Vehicle crashes that occur during winter conditions account for 17% of all accidents.* The slippery roads, freezing temperatures, and visibility issues presented by the cold season certainly contribute to these crashes! To avoid accidents around this time of year, remember these basic winter weather safe driving tips.
• Always turn your headlights on – use low beams.
• Drive slowly and do not make any sudden starts, turns, or stops. • When accelerating, do so slowly to get better traction.
• Tap your brakes to test traction – roads can become icy and slick very quickly.
• Increase the distance between you and the car in front of you to at least a 4-second gap.
• If your car begins to skid, gently turn into the skid and ease off the gas pedal. Do not jerk the steering wheel in the opposite direction.
• Don’t get too close to a snow plow or travel beside it. The road behind the snow plow is safer to drive on. If you find yourself behind a snow plow, stay behind it, or use caution when passing.
• When traveling in winter weather, make sure someone knows your destination, the route you will be taking, and your estimated time of arrival. Take along blankets, water, jumper cables, and a flashlight in case you get stranded. Remember, it’s best to avoid driving in severe winter weather if you have the option!
